Thursday, June 15, 2017
5:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Reception 5:30-6:00 pm
Event 6:00-8:00 pm
The event will feature scenes from the movie Loving, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Loving v. Virginia. Loving is the story of Richard and Mildred Loving, who were arrested and indicted for interracial marriage in Virginia in 1958. The couple pled guilty and were sentenced to one year in prison, but the Court suspended their sentence on the condition that they leave the State of Virginia and not return for 25 years. Their legal battle to overturn this sentence culminated in the historic Supreme Court decision in 1967.
Judge Sara L. Ellis and Magistrate Judge Jeffrey Cole will speak about the film and its insights into the legal profession.
